Emu and chick by water

emu and chick beside water in outback Australia

Emu and chick IMG 0775 - It is the male emu who has the task of raising and tending to his chicks, for his mate's only contribution to the survival of the species is to lay a clutch of eggs. This bird and his group of chicks, who had made the Currawinya National Park in outback Queensland their home, arrived, early in the morning, to quench their thirst at the muddy Paroo River that is the artery that brings life to this remote outback region and to its great diversity of wildlife. All but one of the chicks wandered off to explore the world around them, leaving only this one tiny bird in the company of its doting parent.
