Australian hobby

Australian hobby

Australian hobby. Falco longipennis, IMG 7424 - There’s no prize for guessing why the Australian hobby is commonly know as a ‘little falcon’. The simple reason is that it’s the smallest of the six species of falcons that call Australia home.

It's a bird of prey that's found throughout mainland Australia and in Tasmania, and while open forests and woodlands are its preferred habitat, it takes up residence wherever its prey hangs out, and that includes agricultural regions, wetlands, and urban areas that have the appropriate vegetation to sustain the lifestyles of both this voracious predator and its victims.
