Pacific baza / crested hawk

pacific baza / crested hawk

Pacific baza / crested hawk, Aviceda subcristata, IMG 8263B - This glorious raptor’s colloquial name might sound a little strange, but with the knowledge that ‘baz’, a word within the Hindi language, refers to a goshawk, there’s some rational behind the Pacific baza’s name, for it bears a considerably resemblance to the Australian brown goshawk. It’s not hard to work out the logic behind its other common names either, for ‘crested hawk’ refers to the distinctive crest on the bird’s head, and ‘chicken hawk’ is a reference to the fact that this avian predator occasionally preys on farmyard poultry.
