Coots in flight

panoramic photos of coots in flight

Eurasian coots, Fulica atra, in flight IMG 5854B - The Eurasian coot has itchy feet, for over the centuries it’s travelled from its homeland in Eurasia to Indonesia, New Guinea, and Australia, and in recent years this relatively small waterbird has also found its way to New Zealand, where its population is rapidly increasing.

It’s made itself at home in the wetlands and freshwater lakes that are scattered across the Australian continent, and is happy to live in any environment that includes permanent water and an abundance of reeds and other aquatic plants, although it’s less frequently seen in inland areas and in the northern tropical regions of the country.

This flock of birds was photographed in the botanic gardens in the Queensland city of Bundaberg.
