Snake-necked darter

snake necked darter

Snake-necked darter, Anhinga novaehollandiae, IMG 7765 - The miniscule number of Australians who may be familiar with the Brazilian Tupi language will be aware that ‘Anhinga’, the name of the genus to which this bird belongs, means ‘snake bird’, and when the snake-necked darter takes to the water, with only its long slender neck visible above the surface, it’s easy to see how it acquired its colloquial name. This bird, in an iconic pose, was drying its wings after a feeding excursion on the water.
