Striated pardalote

striated pardalote

Striated pardalote, Pardalotus striatus, IMG 3148A - When their thoughts turn to breeding, a pair of these attractive small birds excavate a tunnel in an earthen bank and create a nest that's well hidden from most predators. This bird was investigating the possibility of taking an easy option and inspecting this hollow plastic pipe, set in a cement wall, in the hope that it might be the perfect place to raise its young. Eventually, the bird fluttered to an adjacent bank and opted to reuse a tunnel that it, or one of its relatives, had used in previous years. And it might even have been the tunnel in which this bird itself had been raised.
