Royal spoonbill - The Flasher

royal spoonbill - the flasher

Royal spoonbill, Platalea regia, IMG 9154A - During the breeding season, males of the species, such as the one shown here, develop long plumes on the back of the head and display their crowning glory to impress a prospective mate. This bird appears to be showing off all his best assets, in the manner of a flasher, with the accompaniment of screeching to attraction the attention of nearby females. He was photographed, in the wild, in the botanic gardens in the Queensland city of Bundaberg.
