tawny frogmouth on nest

Tawny frogmouth, Podargus strigoides IMG 9428 - There are many nocturnal species among the birds of Australia, but the tawny frogmouth is one of the most peculiar. It spends daylight hours sitting on the branch of a tree trying to make itself look like part of the vegetation - and as can be seen in this photo of a bird on its nest, it does an excellent job of camouflaging itself. Although a nocturnal hunter that's often referred to as an owl, the tawny frogmouth, lacking the talons of a true owl, pounces on its prey, which includes insects, rodents, and frogs, as the doomed creature wanders along the ground.
