Ostrich farming was once seen as a way to make a lot of money, but the
industry failed to produce the
promised rewards, and today there are only a few ostrich farms remaining in
Australia. These flightless birds that
are a native species of southern Africa, are valued for their meat, for oil, and
for their skins that are converted into
high quality fine leather for the fashion industry. The large chick shown here
is merely one month old.
