D101  The tomato, a member of the Solanum family of plants that also includes the potato, originated in South America, but has become one of the most familiar of vegetables / fruits in the world. Imagine life without the tomato, and meals, you would discover, would be very bland, for the tomato, in many forms, is included in a wide range of foods - from being a fresh ingredient in a healthy salad, to a major component of countless sauces, soups, and stews. It is one of the easiest of vegetables to grow, and is widely grown on farms around the world, in hydroponic systems, and in home gardens.
