Australian Nankeen night heron
Nycticorax caledonicus IMG 5135 -
These attractive birds, despite their name, are frequently out and about during
daylight hours, and are usually seen on the forested banks of streams, rivers,
lakes or wetlands where they hunt for the small fish, crustaceans, and frogs
that form the major part of their diet. This photo, of a juvenile bird
in the wild, was taken beside a small stream near the tiny Queensland opal
mining town of Yowah in the Australian outback.
