WOODEN RAILWAY BRIDGE, GUNDAGAI, NSW, AUSTRALIA

BACK TO PHOTO GALLERY OF AUSTRALIAN CITIES AND TOWNS

D700E     This wooden railway bridge at the NSW town of Gundagai was constructed in 1903. With a length of  819 metres (half a mile), it is the longest timber truss bridge ever built in Australia. It straddles an area that is prone to flooding, and allowed townsfolk to breath a sigh of relief when rains arrived and the river broke its banks, for the bridge saved the town from complete isolation. It has been replaced with a modern road in recent years and is no longer in use.
