ALUMINIUM SMELTER COMPLEX, GLADSTONE, CENTRAL QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA

BACK TO PHOTOS OF AUSTRALIAN CITIES AND TOWNS

D664  The aluminium smelter at Gladstone, Queensland, Australia is located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. While the owners of the complex may claim that the industry does not contribute to any problems of air or water pollution, the red dust from the bauxite that is used in the production of aluminium and that coats everything within sight of the plant does little to dispel community concerns regarding the negative environmental impact of the smelter. With the public offered free tours of the complex,  the facility has become the city's  major tourist attraction.
