The Murray River near the Victorian city of Mildura may appear calm and
peaceful, but it is at the heart of an ongoing
war being raged by the drought that is currently ravaging much of Australia.
Reflections in the river's still blue water, forests
that line the riverbank and where the only sounds are of birds twittering, and
reeds that move gently in a subtle breeze paint
a picture of serenity in this rural landscape. But the reality is far more harsh
as the river is dying, and scenes such as this are
primarily a result of locks and weirs that retain the limited amounts of water
that still flow along this major Australian waterway.
