The tranquil waters of
the Murrumbidgee River near the Australian outback
town of Hay in the state of New South Wales counter
the common perception that the outback is merely an arid desert wilderness.
While much of the region is unquestionably barren
and dry, rivers, such as the Murrumbidgee, slice through the landscape to
create, here and there, a secluded oasis, a natural environment
that enables wildlife to survive in an otherwise desolate and inhospitable
region. Human visitors to the region are also attracted
to the river to camp in the bush, to fish, and to enjoy the solitude and beauty
of inland Australia.
