A sunset on the waters of the Pacific Ocean that fills a coral lagoon at Lady
Musgrave Island, an uninhabited coral
cay at the southern end of Australia's Great Barrier Reef, is seen by few
people. Tourists regularly visit the island to
dive and snorkel in the lagoon's clear waters, but only those who make the long
journey to the island and camp overnight on
its white sandy beaches catch a glimpse of the natural beauty of this remote
destination. The small forested island becomes
a temporary home to more than 50,000 sea birds that nest in its dense
trees each year. And in summer months marine turtles
come ashore at night to lay their eggs in the warm sand.
