Gum tree shield bugs and eggs IMG 4195A - These insects, which live on the trunks of eucalyptus trees, suck the sap from their hosts. They are also known as 'eucalypt shield bugs', but are most commonly referred to as 'stink bugs' due to the fact that they emit a foul smelling liquid as a defensive mechanicism to protect themselves from predators. The insects pictured are the insect's tiny nymphs that have just hatched from its silvery eggs.
