eucalypt shield bug gum tree stink beetle on bark of eucalyptus tree

Eucalypt shield beetle IMG 1433 - This decorative Australian insect (Poecilometis patruelis) lives on and under the bark of native eucalyptus / gum trees from which it sucks the sap. It emits an unpleasant odour when disturbed, and it's this characteristic that has earned it the alternative common name of 'gum tree stink bug'.
