D674E Red deer
are farmed for their meat (venison), and also for antler velvet that is
used in a range of pharmaceutical products. The deer industry in Australia
has struggled to survive due to the widespread drought and the subsequent
increased cost of feed, with few farmers currently breeding deer on a commercial
basis. Animals have routinely escaped from captivity over the time since
their initial introduction into the country, and run wild in many areas of the
country where they are frequently hunted by shooters.
