Entrance to glow worm tunnel near Newnes NSW
Australia IMG 8879 - The forests surrounding the town of Newnes once rang
with the sounds of hard work, for here there was a vibrant shale oil mining
industry. Today the picturesque ruins of the era can be seen across the verdant
landscape, and this tunnel, carved through the mountains to enable locomotives
to transport products from the region, is one of the most fascinating reminders
of the past. The long curved tunnel, reached via a walking trail that meanders
through the Wollemi National Park, is now home to large numbers of glow worms
and is a popular regional tourist attraction that is within easy reach of the
city of Lithgow.
