D608E  If you have ever considered that pelicans are friendly, docile, and almost domesticated  birds, then think again. While they may be eager to accept a handout of food from fishermen, and appear to have minimal fear of humans, there is a more aggressive side to their nature. It was a characteristic I discovered when, in my kayak, I approached this flock of pelicans on the beach of a small island uninhabited by humans, only to be threatened by the dominant male who literally ran towards me with his great wings outstretched in a way that clearly indicated that he saw me as an unwelcome intruder. Understandably, I made a hasty retreat.
