Australian outback in drought

australian outback during drought with fence across barren treeless plains in western queensland australia

Drought in outback Queensland IMG 8441 - When south-western Queensland is in the grip of a savage drought, all that sprouts from the treeless plains that stretch to the horizon are fences. They serve no purpose other than to define the boundary of a property or to divide one vast and barren paddock from another, for cattle that once grazed here have either been sold or moved to other regions that have not been beaten into submission by the punishing hand of nature. Australian outback regions have known the comings and goings of droughts for centuries, but as both the frequency and the severity of such events intensify, the role that climate change and global warming might play cannot be ignored.
