Australian outback in Drought

drought in outback asutralia with solitary dead tree on treeless plains

Drought in western Queensland IMG 8473 - When drought strikes outback Australia, life is tough for humans who live in the region and for native birds and animals. With no grass available for their livestock, graziers must watch their animals die of starvation, sell them, move them to another property that has been spared from the punishing impact of drought, or take the costly option and purchase expensive feed until rains arrive and new grasses sprout from the sun-baked earth. Most Australian inland regions, such as south-western Queensland where this scene was photographed, have known the comings and goings of droughts for centuries, but as both the frequency and the severity of such events intensify, the role that climate change and global warming might play cannot be ignored.
