landscape with spinifex grass

rocky outback ridge with spinifex triodia grass

Outback Queensland IMG 6930 - During severe droughts in western Queensland any rocky outcrops that rise from the plains are more naked than ever, but spinifex / tussock grass, a Triodia species, survives in this harsh environment. This spiny plant, which is often referred to as 'porcupine grass', provides a habitat for reptiles. Its tough stems provide shelter from the heat of the day and allow snakes and lizards to hide from predators, such as birds of prey, that routinely patrol the skies.
