416E The mirror
surface of the calm shallow waters of the Pink Lake, at the heart of the Murray
Sunset National Park, might have appeared like a mirage on the landscape to
thirsty explorers as they trudged across the arid plains of the Australian
outback in the early 19th century, but its waters are highly saline. It is algae
that thrive in the lake and that often give it a rosy hue that have given it its
name.
