D093  Cicadas are flying insects that inhabit many tropical regions, including those in northern Australia. They spend much of their lives - often several years - deep underground, and when they finally emerge, often after summer rains, they clamber up the first thing they come across and change from a beetle into a creature with large yet fragile wings. They then make their way to the top of a tree to breed before dying. Their larvae fall to the ground, and burrow into a subterranean world where they will live until it is their turn to be transformed from beast into beauty.
