D669E The echidna is one
of the most fascinating and unusual of the wild animals found in
Australia. It is commonly referred to as a spiny ant eater due to
the fact that its diet consists primarily of termites, and also as a porcupine,
although it is unrelated to this other spiny creature. The most amazing
characteristic of the echidna is that it is a monotreme - an egg laying mammal,
and has a pouch in which its young are carried - until their ferocious spines
develop.
