201 A goanna is a large Australian monitor lizard. Goannas live in areas as diverse as rainforests and arid areas on the edge of the outback. They rummage through the vegetation on the forest floor in the hope of catching prey, which can range from small insects, beetles, and other reptiles such as skinks, to ground nesting birds and their eggs. Their are very agile when it comes to climbing trees, and here too they seek out birds and eggs. In rural areas they often raid hen houses and eat both chicks and eggs. They pose no threat to people, although in popular camping areas where they have been regularly fed by humans, they can become a nuisance as they will steal any unattended food.
