D432    Grasshoppers are unwelcome visitors in agricultural areas and in gardens where they feast on plants. Their attacks can be countered with the use of pesticides, but for organic farmers and gardeners the best defence against these voracious insect pests is to encourage plenty of native birds to live nearby. The grasshopper's tough armour plating offers it protection from many carnivorous insect species, but does little to save it from becoming a meal for birds.
