Scarlet honeyeater

Female scarlet honeyeater, Myzomela sanguinolenta, IMG 3511 - The male scarlet honeyeater is unquestionably a bird that once seen is never forgotten, and anyone who fails to be awestruck by his or her first glimpse of this small but spectacular bird would have to be as emotive as an inebriated weevil. Its stunning red plumage has earned it the alternative names of ‘blood bird’ and ‘crimson honeyeater’, but the female has none of the gaudy colours of her eye-catching mate.
